Value and appreciate freedom of expression

At St Joseph's College Preparatory School children are encouraged to participate in Performing Arts

Our approach is to encourage every child to value and appreciate freedom of expression, to gain and build their self-confidence and to promote opportunities for teamwork and creativity through the media of Speech and Drama. We believe that these are vital life skills which will be of huge benefit to pupils regardless of whether or not they choose to pursue Speech and Drama.

St Joseph’s College Preparatory School is extremely lucky to have a dedicated mini Theatre where the major productions take place. We also have the opportunity to use the Theatre and Music Hall at the College for larger productions incorporating the College.

Throughout the curriculum all pupils are encouraged to take part in music and drama regardless of their ability.  We want all of our pupils to enjoy Drama, and to instill a desire in them to pursue Drama outside and beyond the School walls.

Each Christmas all the children perform in 2 productions to which parents and grandparents are invited.  During the Spring Term all the pupils’ take part in our Inter-house Poetry competition, where choral speaking is developed and performed.

Children can also enrol to take individual lessons in Speech and Drama and each year pupils from St Joseph’s College Preparatory School take part in the Woodley Festival of Music and Art. We are extremely proud to say that that the performance of our pupils is excellent, with winners in all age groups and all categories from prose to instrumental to singing.  Many pupils use the experience and the training to help them when they sit formal speech and drama examinations.
