Adopt a critical, reflective, rigorous mindset

Pupils acquaint with the works of some of the world's greatest thinkers, and are encouraged to adopt a critical, reflective, rigorous mindset in their approach to the great questions philosophers have tried to answer down the ages

Philosophy and Ethics is taught as an option group under A-level Religious Studies. The subject is taught in a lively, but challenging, way. Extensive use is made of the digital whiteboard; carefully planned and attractively presented materials help pupils enter into the subject matter more deeply. The groups are small enough for each pupil to feel an individual and yet there is a chance to have a group dynamic. Great effort is expended in helping pupils grapple with the thoughts of Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, and the like, at first hand - this is always done with some humour and originality so as to maintain rigour whilst avoiding a dour teaching approach. The pupils attend the large Philosophy conferences in Oxford or London to sharpen their knowledge and build their enthusiasm.

Currently, the pupils follow the OCR Philosophy and Ethics pathway. Each year this is reviewed in the light of specification changes and pupil interest. For example, the option to take the pure Philosophy A-level, with its extra emphasis on the Theory of Knowledge and on Political Philosophy, is always available.
